Cherry Creek & Westminster Adult Orthodontics
Welcome to the orthodontic practice of Dr. Ron Unterseher, where our team offers orthodontic care to children and adults. Our goal is to provide our patients with excellent care while making them feel comfortable and relaxed. As our practice has grown, we have seen increasing numbers of adult patients who are looking to improve the appearance of their smile. With the progress made in orthodontic technology, our adult patients have more treatment options than ever to fit their needs and lifestyle, including discreet solutions that are almost invisible. Additionally, adults are seeing that orthodontic care is a worthy investment for the health and appearance benefits a smile has on their lives socially, personally and professionally.
Orthodontic care can be done at any age and being “too old for braces” is simply untrue; however, once the growth and development of the jaw is complete it cannot be changed, so unlike children’s jaws, you cannot use orthodontics to change the shape of an adult jaw.
A primary area of concern for adult candidates is periodontal (gum) disease. Gums play a big role in orthodontic treatment because they allow movement, so if a patient’s gums are not healthy then there could be major consequences including potential bone loss or weak long-term prognosis of teeth. We want to make sure that any gum disease is taken care of before orthodontic treatment starts. Additionally, you will want to do your best to keep your mouth extra clean during treatment and keep up with regular dental cleanings.
Orthodontic Treatment For Adults
The basics of orthodontic care doesn’t vary much from one treatment to the next: using light, constant force to adjust your teeth into the position prescribed by Dr. Unterseher; however, there is a variety of different ways that this force can be applied which is what which is what diversifies one treatment from another. New innovative treatment options are more discreet, allowing patients to continue their professional and personal lives without the disruption of treatment. Some of these options include:
- Tradition Metal Braces - When most people think about braces this is what they think of, silver brackets and wires attached to the teeth. This traditional method of orthodontic treatment by Damon Braces is very effective and new technology has made the brackets smaller and less noticeable.
- Clear Braces - Working similarly to traditional metal braces, clear braces use a bracket made out of a ceramic material that blends into the natural color of your tooth, making your treatment almost unnoticeable. Although this is a great option, the ceramic material is more fragile than the metal and needs to be cared for in a gentle manner.
- Clear Aligners - Invisalign is becoming an increasingly popular option for orthodontic treatment. Invisalign is a system of clear aligners that are switched out every 2 weeks to create a straighter, more beautiful smile. Invisalign also offers more comfort than traditional braces and is removable for eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing which means there are no restrictions to what you can eat during treatment.
- Lingual Braces - lingual braces work similarly to traditional braces except the brackets are used of the backside of the tooth rather than the front. Lingual braces are an effective and efficient treatment option that is very discreet.
Retention is perhaps the most important part of your orthodontic treatment. Dr. Unterseher has seen many cases where the patient failed to wear their retainers and had to go through treatment again because their teeth moved back into their original position. Your retainer keeps your teeth in position so that the bone has time to develop around the new positions, so save yourself the time and money of having to go through treatment again and wear your retainer.
