How Braces Straighten Teeth

by Televox SuperUser on Thursday, June 16, 2016 2:00 PM

Besides appearance, there are many reasons why people would want to straighten their teeth. Crooked teeth can impact dental health by wearing tooth enamel and by the bacteria buildup from the difficulty of cleaning. The desire to straighten teeth has been around for ages and so has braces. Some brace-like appliances even date back to 400-300BC. With the advent of modern day orthodontics, braces became much more effective in straightening teeth. However, the concept still remains the same—apply consistent force to the teeth in attempts to reposition them.

The AAO Ranks Acidity Levels in Popular Drinks - and It's Not a Pretty Picture

Not for teeth, anyways! That's because according to a new study by the American Association of Orthodontists, even the drinks we think of as healthy - like diet drinks, sports drinks, and fruit drinks that have low or no sugar levels - can contain high levels of acids. This is bad news for your teeth, as acid eats away at the enamel that protects them and keeps them healthy and strong. The first step is knowing, and this blog will tell you what to watch for.

It’s National Children’s Dental Health Month

by Televox SuperUser on Thursday, February 25, 2016 3:05 AM

At Unterseher Orthodontics, we love February. And while you may be rolling your eyes at our sentimentality, it's probably not for the reason you're thinking - February is Pediatric Dentistry Month, a cause that we feel is incredibly important. We have a lot of respect for pediatric dentists and the work they do, as they lay the groundwork that helps us craft a healthy, beautiful smile for our patients.

Getting braces is a big transition - and while almost every patient quickly finds out that it's not nearly as big a deal as they'd thought, we know that for many kids and teens, the thought of getting braces seems seriously daunting. As a parent, this can be a hard thing to deal with – parents often tell us they’re unsure how to help their child prepare for the change. To help out, we've put together a few helpful tips on preparing your children for braces.

The Importance of Retainers

by Televox SuperUser on Saturday, November 21, 2015 2:31 AM

As much as we love every stage of braces here at Unterseher Orthodontics, we know that most of our patients pick one particular part as their favorite – the moment they get their braces off! It's always an exciting day, and we love to see the joy on our patients' faces as they take a look at their brand new smiles. But as much as this is a momentous occasion, they're not out of the woods yet - now begins the retention phase of treatment, something absolutely critical to the long-term health of their smile. For this blog, we're going to talk about why retainers are such an important part of orthodontic treatment.

DIY Braces Are Spooky!

by Televox SuperUser on Friday, October 16, 2015 1:45 AM

Halloween is just around the corner, and we know that means many of our patients are getting ready for a night of fun, friends, and frights. From scary movies and ghost stories to elaborate costumes and party decorations, Halloween is always a fun time to get together with friends and take part in a little harmless, frightful fun. But while we whole-heartedly condone a good ghost story, for this blog, we wanted to talk about something that truly terrifies us: a new fad called Do-It-Yourself braces. Sound a little suspect? You don't know the half of it.

Providing Thanksgiving Meals For Less Fortunate Families

For the past eight years the Adams County Housing Authority (ACHA) and the Adam’s County Sherriff’s Office have teamed up to provide those that are less fortunate around the holiday season by providing them with a Thanksgiving meal. They distribute certificates, valued at $12, that can be used towards a free turkey as well as non-perishable food items to complete the Thanksgiving meal, like stuffing, canned cranberries or veggies, mashed potatoes, gravy and more. Last year the ACHA distributed more than 6,000 certificates and over 800 bags filled with food items!

The Importance of A Mouth Guard

by Televox SuperUser on Wednesday, September 16, 2015 12:31 AM

Fall is here, and that means many of our patients are getting back into the groove of schoolwork, classes, and fall sports. We're always happy for our patients during this exciting time of year, and it brings us joy to see our athletic patients doing what they love to do out on the field. But while we love seeing our athletic patients excel, sports can also pose a danger to teeth and braces - one misstep or rough tackle can loosen teeth, hurt jawbones, or break braces and other orthodontic appliances. For this blog, we're going to talk about why using a mouth guard is so important when playing or practicing sports.

At Unterseher Orthodontics, we always want to keep our patients as well informed as possible.
